SkillsUSA – is a national organization for students enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations. SkillsUSA prepares America’s high performance workers. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality of work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities. Through participation in SkillsUSA, students have the opportunity to develop both professional/technical skills and leadership skills.
Stafford Technical Center students are highly involved in SkillsUSA at all levels: local, state, and national. For over 30 years, Stafford students have consistently demonstrated the the skills necessary to progress to the SkillsUSA National Competitions. In 2004, six Stafford students earned gold medals at the state level, and then went on to compete at the national level. In 2000, Joannah Roush, a Health Occupations student from Stafford Technical Center won a gold medal at the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City.

Students compete at SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Championships in Kansas City
On June 25th, three students from Stafford Technical Center in Rutland competed in the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Championships held in Kansas City, Missouri. They were there as part of the 45th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, a showcase of career and technical education students, held during the week of Jun 22-June 26, 2009.
These students were among approximately 5400 contestants who participated in 91 different hands on skills and leadership competitions. Patty Danahy (Fair Haven Union High School) competed in Architectural Drafting, Lindsey Brown (Mill River Union High School) competed in Nurse Assisting, and Josh McDonough (Otter Valley Union High School) competed in Residential Plumbing.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives working together to insure America has as skilled workforce. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development.
