EDUC-15  THE SCIENCE AND ART OF GRANT-WRITING

This course will provide concrete, practical guidance for preparing successful grant proposals.  Participants will learn how to organize proposals, find and use pertinent facts and data, and make your proposals stand out in a crowd.  We will discuss strategies to fully meet common grant application requirements, the tricky issues of budgets and evaluation, and the importance of the overall proposal appearance.  You will learn how to avoid common errors that keep many applications from being funded, along with how to search for grant opportunities.
Workshop Leader  Ann Lezak has extensive experience preparing applications for federal, state and foundation grants.  She has written successful major federal grant applications, ranging from $400,000 to $8.3 million.  In addition, Ms. Lezak has sought out and received numerous smaller grants on behalf of local mental health, aging, and child-serving agencies.  Ms. Lezak regularly leads grant-writing workshops at the local, state and national levels, including nine training sessions for applicants to major national grant programs sponsored by the federal Center for Mental Health Services.  She also provides individualized grant-writing consultation to social service agencies.

EDUC-08  WRITING LIFE STORIES

Everyone has a story to tell, and “Writing Life Stories” can help you turn your memories into effective narratives, even if you have never considered yourself a writer.  This class will provide hints to jumpstart the writing process, and offer practical writing advice about the fundamentals of plot and character development.  We will also read and study together some life stories that others have written, to provide inspiration for our own writing.  By the end of this class, each participant should have two complete short-form memoirs or the beginning of a book.

EDUC-11  POETRY WORKSHOP

Fledging as well as more experienced poets are welcome to participate in this nurturing atmosphere with an opportunity for gentle feedback. We’ll read and examine the work of other poets, and do writing exercises to help develop more understanding in crafting original poems. This workshop involves the study of poetic elements including alliteration, assonance, metaphor, simile, personification, etc.

“Dealing with Difficult People” is a communications course for everyone.  This course will cover strategies for moving complainers to problem-solvers, blamers to producers, and one-uppers to team players.  Students will gain insight and skills for dealing with difficult people at home, at work, or in the grocery store.
